Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) has been designated as Project  Implementation Unit (PIU) for tanneries by Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP) for Integrated Development of Leather Sector (IDLS) scheme which commenced  in 10th Five year plan from 3rd Nov. 2005 and is being continued into 11th five year plan upto 31st March 2012.

The scheme targets creation of positive ambience by way of grant on investments for Technology upgradation for attaining global competitiveness through productivity gains, minimization of wastages, quality improvement, right sizing of capacity, cost cutting, design & development, Environmental safeguards and workers’ safety and R&D and testing facility.
With this scheme tanneries have been equipped with state of art machinery including imported origin such as Automatic Drums (Wooden as well as Polypropylene), Splitting, Shaving, Sammying and setting machine, staking, Automatic Spraying machine, Roller Coating and Through feed Embossing machine.

The IDLS Scheme is able to generate additional investment of Rs. 716 Cr for modernaisation in addition to further employment of 7100 persons and added capacity to the extent of 320 mill sq.ft. of leather.
